Procrastination may be an enemy that studio artists battle constantly, but the most dangerous foe is apathy. If you don't care about what you are creating then what's the point? If you are not engaged and inspired and energized and excited by creating, it will show. Believe me, I know. I fell into this trap a couple of years ago when I had agreed to do a show with my friend. The show was a couple of months out and I didn't really have new work, but I reasoned that I had plenty of time to "get inspired" and produce a new group of paintings. Wrong. I remember after the opening for that show feeling dirty, like a fraud. I vowed from that point forward to only show work in public when I felt I had something worth sharing and while that has limited my public work, it has certainly improved the quality of my output and I am never apathetic about what I create. If I create art outside of my teaching responsibilities or commission work, it's because I have something that needs to get out. When something is clawing to get out, it can leave some interesting traces on its' way and that's when things can get interesting. If you're lucky….and patient.
